Open and flexible use of custom relational data was one of the objectives. Our lead developer spent 11 years with his past employer building another ESP that sends about 6 billion messages a year for thousands of clients. His new platform is vastly superior. I’ll looking for folks that want to beta our platform and provide feedback as we continue to extent the platform.

Hello Saul, thank you for your comment, I completely agree! The secret is setting up the data in the most appropriate way based on what you’re trying to accomplish!

I totally agree with the concept of a relational database to support your email marketing. After all the majority of data within ‘lists’ originate from a relational database.
In fact, we’ve built our business ‘Websand’ around that very fact – making relational databases for marketing automation to feed our preferred ESP.
We’ve found one of the main problems is that relational databases can be complicated and difficult for non technical marketers to get their head around.
However, if you are looking to do some behaviour driven data driven marketing, then you need to link to a relational database – otherwise it’s simply too much work!
All of this increases the importance of planning your marketing activity. Marketing automation needs a plan. It’s not an adhoc newsletter activity.
Of course, you always have the option to keep things ‘traditional’ and simple. In that case, as you say. A flat file is just fine.
