What Your Choice Says about Your Email Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The number of email service providers a brand uses to send its emails reveals a lot about their email program\u2014how sophisticated it is, the size of their email team, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether they use a homegrown email platform is equally revealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In Litmus\u2019 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/lp\/2016-state-of-email-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of Email Production report<\/a>, we asked more than 900 email marketers which platforms they use to send their emails, among many other things. We found that brands were nearly evenly divided between those using just one platform and those using two or more, with brands using 1.8 email platforms each on average to send their marketing emails.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/number-of-email-platforms-used.png\" rel=\"lightbox[hidden]\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/number-of-email-platforms-used.png\" alt=\"number-of-email-platforms-used\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>[<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=Number%20of%20Email%20Platforms%20Used%20chart%20from%20%40litmusapp%20State%20of%20Email%20Production%20pic.twitter.com\/OoFsneHvT1%20http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fesp-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">TWEET THIS CHART<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest ESPs represented the majority of the specific platforms brands used. For example, the top 10 email service providers used by our respondents claimed almost 56% market share among this group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, smaller, more niche ESPs were well-represented too. In total, our respondents used more than 100 ESPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Completing the mix, nearly 11% of our respondents used homegrown email platforms. These platforms are developed and maintained in-house and generally trade sophistication for lower costs. Often, companies have had their homegrown platforms in place for many, many years.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/email-service-providers-used-2016.png\" rel=\"lightbox[hidden]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/email-service-providers-used-2016.png\" alt=\"email-service-providers-used-2016\" class=\"wp-image-12095\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>[<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=Email%20Service%20Providers%20Used%20chart%20from%20%40litmusapp%20State%20of%20Email%20Production%20pic.twitter.com\/3MaYkhlwbt%20http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fesp-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">TWEET THIS CHART<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digging into the data, we found that these three groups\u2014users of 1 ESP, users of multiple ESPs, and users of homegrown platforms\u2014had some interesting differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 ESP vs. multiple ESPs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are advantages to sending all of your emails via one platform, using two or more ESPs tends to be a marker of a more sophisticated (and more complex) production process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, brands using multiple ESPs generally have larger email teams, more emails in production at once, and longer production cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>35.4% of brands using two or more ESPs have email teams of 5 or more, compared to 25.7% of brands using one ESP. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=36.5%25%20of%20brands%20using%202%2B%20ESPs%20have%2011%2B%20emails%20in%20production%20at%20once%2C%20vs.%2025.8%25%20using%201%20ESP%3A%20http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fesp-research%20via%20%40litmusapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">TWEET THIS<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Brands using multiple ESPs were slightly more likely to use both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/email-marketing-agencies\/\">email agencies<\/a> and freelancers. They were also a bit more likely to use software tools like Emmet, <a href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/blog\/speed-up-your-email-production-process-with-task-runners-and-static-site-generators-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">static site generators<\/a>, task runners, and postprocessors \u2014 although all of those saw relatively little usage among email marketers. In some ways they seemed less sophisticated, but other ways there were the most sophisticated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>41.1% of brands using homegrown email platforms have email teams of 5 or more, compared to 31.6% for the average brand. [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=34.7%25%20of%20brands%20using%20homegrown%20email%20platforms%20use%20dynamic%20content%20in%20all%2Fmost%20emails%20http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fesp-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TWEET THIS<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of this unevenness is likely due to the fact that one-third of these brands rely entirely on their homegrown platform to send all their email, while the remaining two-thirds use theirs in conjunction with at least one other email platform. Based on the ESPs used by this second group, it appears that most of these brands primarily send transactional emails with their homegrown platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There aren\u2019t necessarily any right or wrong approaches, since every brand\u2019s email marketing goals and needs are unique.
