In email marketing this can be crucial, as (recipient) data is used and\/or stored in multiple databases and must be available for sending email, performing analytics and automating triggered campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_ETL_process\"><\/span><strong>The ETL process:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How does the ETL proces look like using your email service provider?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Extracting data from the source(s)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Transforming it to fit operational needs<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Loading it into the end target (ESP, database or data warehouse)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Extracting_data\"><\/span><strong>Extracting data<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many databases and data warehouses contain data from different source systems, each with a potentially different data format. Common data source formats are relational databases and flat files, or outside sources acquired through web spidering or scraping. The extraction phase converts those data sources into a single format that can be used in the transformation process. This data extraction can be performed by utilizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/api-application-programming-interface\/\">APIs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Transforming_the_data\"><\/span><strong>Transforming the data<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this stage, a series of rules or functions are applied to the extracted data. Some data sources will require little or no manipulation of data. In other cases, transformations such as joining, sorting, selecting and aggregating may be required to meet the business and technical needs of the target database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Loading_the_data\"><\/span><strong>Loading the data<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this phase, the data is loaded into the end target &#8211; a data warehouse, ESP database or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/what-is-crm\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">CRM<\/a>. In some cases, cumulative information overwrites existing information. The frequency of updating extract data can range from monthly to weekly, daily or even hourly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_uses_in_email_marketing\"><\/span><strong>Other uses in email marketing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way companies use ETL is to permanently transfer information from one application to another, such as when a new database vendor or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/email-service-provider-esp\/\">email service provider<\/a> is selected.
