Originally, only emails that automatically responded to an email sent to an inbox &#8211; such as an out-of-office email or a bounce message &#8211;\u00a0were considered autoresponders.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Current-day_autoresponders_in_email_marketing\"><\/span>Current-day autoresponders in email marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Autoresponders can range from very simple to quite complex. As an email marketing tool, autoresponders can provide immediate information to (prospective) customers. Autoresponders can exist outside the inbox as well; they can be triggered by someone filling in a form on a website or by a database field being changed.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_of_event-triggered_autoresponders\"><\/span>Examples of event-triggered autoresponders:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are different types of autoresponders, also known as triggered emails, examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Welcome messages<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Alerts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Requested information, such as a whitepaper or a quote<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Confirmation emails<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Thank-you emails<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_your_email_tools_autoresponder_look_like\"><\/span>What does your email tool&#8217;s autoresponder look like?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Autoresponders oftentimes are a feature of email newsletter software. However, how the autoresponder functionality is implemented can vary from one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/email-service-provider-esp\/\">email service provider<\/a>\u00a0to another.\u00a0Some ESPs have a maximum number of autoresponders you can set up or limit the selection of groups to whom you can send them. <\/p>\n<p>Others will not send the autoresponder message immediately, but periodically (hourly or daily). Note: Some ESPs do not include the autoresponder functionality in the base product and will tack on an additional fee if you want to deploy autoresponder emails as a part of their event driven campaign functionality.<\/p>\n<p>Another way autoresponders are sent is via a email relay service or by sending it directly through the ESPs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/api-application-programming-interface\/\">API<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Terms_related_to_autoresponder\"><\/span>Terms related to autoresponder<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The terms &#8220;event-driven email&#8221;, &#8220;drip campaigns&#8221; and &#8220;triggered email&#8221; are all related to the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/marketing-automation\/\">email marketing automation<\/a> and sending emails in a predetermined fashion. The term &#8220;autoresponder,&#8221; however, usually (with exceptions, of course) refers to a single email sent and has a connotation of less sophistication than the other terms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An autoresponder is an email automatically sent after an action has been taken.
