It\u2019s my take on the platform after a month of testing and comparing it to all my experiences with email marketing software. (I have tested over 40.) I\u2019ll give you my honest opinion as I walk through beehiiv\u2019s main tools and features step-by-step. The bits I like and those I don\u2019t like.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is beehiiv different from other email marketing platforms?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With any good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/best-email-marketing-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">email marketing platform<\/a> today, you can create and send a good-looking email. Like via their ad network and recommendations. Where beehiiv sets itself apart from Kit is its list growth tools.<br><br>Because, after all, more newsletter subscribers mean more money. It has the usual sign-up forms. You can also create \u2018Magic Links\u2019 for one-click sign-ups and a full network of other newsletters that can recommend you. Beehiiv does both in one place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not recommended if:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you want the absolute cheapest, and budget is your main concern. <\/strong>Beehiiv is a service that is especially good for creators. Loaded with a lot of cool functions it is oddly still cheaper than Mailchimp. But where beehiiv shines is the extra features on top of those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll start with landing pages and forms. To make a landing page, you go to the <strong>website builder:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/navigating-to-the-beehiiv-website-builder.png\" alt=\"navigating to the beehiiv website builder\" class=\"wp-image-92358\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beehiiv groups everything together. You build a website to publish your newsletter on. You can use this as an archive or as an actual website. There\u2019s a clear emphasis on lead generation. Every Homepage comes with a <strong>Subscribe <\/strong>embed form already made. The other two pre-formatted page options are for a <strong>Signup Page <\/strong>and an <strong>Upgrade Page<\/strong>. The more fields a signup form has, the less likely people are to complete it. So it makes sense to keep the first capture step easy. And then ask subscribers for more details directly after.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In beehiiv, this is easily done in <strong>Audience &gt;Surveys<\/strong>, where you can build forms with any custom fields you like to capture any data about your subscribers. The publisher of one of beehiiv\u2019s most successful newsletters thinks so. <em>Wrongs to Write <\/em>gets around 900 new subscribers every month. You only pay for genuine, engaged subscribers after they signed up. So it\u2019s a very interesting option for quickly building an engaged audience. The links are specific to other email services, like ActiveCampaign, HubSpot, Kit, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, and more. If you already run a blog or newsletter, you\u2019ll already be familiar with these types of tools. It&#8217;s just like typing in Word or Google Docs, super simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-newsletter-editor-styling-options.png\" alt=\"beehiiv newsletter editor styling options\" class=\"wp-image-92333\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All the options to make the email fit your brand are under the <strong>Style <\/strong>tab in the top right. You can change colours and fonts. And adjust spacing and borders. Under <strong>Advanced <\/strong>styling options, you can style \u2018<strong>widgets<\/strong>\u2019 for CTA buttons, lists, and tables. You also get extra image formatting options here. That sounds like a lot, but actually customization is pretty limited if we compare it to other email marketing services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-email-editor-advanced-styling-options.png\" alt=\"beehiiv email editor advanced styling options\" class=\"wp-image-92344\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the focus is simplicity. As a blogger or writer, your want to focus&nbsp; on the quality of your content. More&nbsp; than on elaborate visual email designs. Beehiiv keeps that side of things very stripped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where beehiiv gets more interesting is personalization. You can add information relevant to each recipient to your newsletter. And you can also switch what content they see with <strong>dynamic content.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do both of these things with <strong>merge tags. <\/strong>Merge tags link data held about your subscribers to your newsletter. You can also create your own to personalize with any information you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where beehiiv stands out is that you can also track subscriber behaviour. And use that to personalize emails. For example, the image above shows merge tags linked to referral milestones. You can use these to show how many referrals a subscriber has made. And how many until their next reward milestone. You can also use this data to show different images and text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This gets us into dynamic content. You can use subscriber data to create audience <strong>segments<\/strong>. So everyone who has X number of referrals. Everyone in a particular country. Everyone who has subscribed in the last X months, etc. You can then use these as rules for displaying different content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t confuse merge tags with the <strong>Add content tags <\/strong>option on the <strong>Write <\/strong>page. In <strong>Audience, <\/strong>you decide who will receive your newsletter by email. In <strong>Email, <\/strong>you add your subject line. And activate social links to make your newsletter easy to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-subject-line-AB-test.png\" alt=\"beehiiv subject line A:B test\" class=\"wp-image-92327\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <strong>A\/B test<\/strong> up to four subject lines. This includes beehiiv SEO and visibility options. The latter lets you control who can see your post. E.g. paid subscribers only. You can set up free trials and time-limited offers. The personalization tools are also a great help here. You can set up newsletters with extra content for premium subscriptions. But your free followers still get something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subscriptions can be a solid source of recurring income for your newsletter. Including how many steps or \u2018nodes\u2019 each sequence has. This also shows you can build some pretty advanced workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-welcome-series-automation-workflow.png\" alt=\"beehiiv welcome series automation workflow\" class=\"wp-image-92353\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The templates range from a very basic one-step welcome workflow. To an advanced 10-step re-engagement workflow for inactive subscribers. In between, you get a sequence welcoming new paid subscribers who have upgraded from free. One to remind new subscribers to complete an onboarding survey. A payment reminder template. One thing I really like is that you can set conditions for each action. A lot of its biggest publishers use them to automate connections to social media. For example, Dakota Robertson uses beehiiv\u2019s welcome sequences to onboard followers from Twitter. He says this is a crucial step in converting leads into customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Managing_contacts_in_beehiiv\"><\/span>Managing contacts in beehiiv<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>List management goes hand in hand with beehiiv\u2019s focus on list growth. Its big strength is the ability to create <strong>custom data fields<\/strong> and <strong>tags<\/strong> for each contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data fields<\/strong> are information you gather and store about each contact. You can gather new data by running <strong>surveys <\/strong>and <strong>polls. <\/strong>You just link questions in a survey to a custom data field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/creating-a-new-custom-field-for-subscribers-in-beehiiv.png\" alt=\"creating a new custom field for subscribers in beehiiv\" class=\"wp-image-92356\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tags are more for internal use. They tell you extra information about a contact. But this isn\u2019t data that is held as part of their profile. So, for example, you might want to tag contacts by which form they signed up with. Or who they were referred by. I like the way beehiiv lets you color-code tags, too. This helps you see groups of contacts quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using segments in beehiiv<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Custom fields and tags let you segment<strong> <\/strong>your subscribers any way you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-segmentation.png\" alt=\"beehiiv segmentation\" class=\"wp-image-92328\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beehiiv is excellent for this. A cool feature is that you can make your segments dynamic. Meaning that whatever criteria you set, beehiiv updates who fits them. This is ideal for building segments for any customer data that changes over time. Like referral points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are four main ways you can segment your beehiiv list:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>By contact <strong>attributes, <\/strong>including custom fields and tags.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By <strong>engagement, <\/strong>e.g. number of opens and clicks within a fixed time period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By <strong>email <\/strong>or <strong>automation data. <\/strong>This means sorting contacts by which emails received. Or which workflow they\u2019ve been through.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By <strong>behaviour data. <\/strong>This includes survey and poll responses. And referral count.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes beehiiv\u2019s segmentation so powerful is that you can combine as many of these as you like with AND\/OR operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-creating-segments-with-custom-fields-and-tags.png\" alt=\"beehiiv creating segments with custom fields and tags\" class=\"wp-image-92346\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to create segments with behaviour data is a sign of high-quality segmentation. It means you can identify your most loyal subscribers by open and click rate. And target them with special offers or premium content, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/making-segments-with-engagement-data-in-beehiiv.png\" alt=\"making segments with engagement data in beehiiv\" class=\"wp-image-92357\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also identify users with low engagement. And reengage or remove them from your list. This means you don\u2019t waste time with disinterested subscribers. For example, the below segment sorts out people who take part in a free trial. But don\u2019t read many of your newsletters. This doesn\u2019t surprise me. It stakes its reputation on growing your online business and making you money. Strong performance is key to both. And data unlocks strong performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main account dashboard is an analytics dashboard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-analytics-dashboard.png\" alt=\"beehiiv analytics dashboard\" class=\"wp-image-92349\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives you all the headline performance information you need for your publication. In the <strong>Overview <\/strong>tab, you can see top-level data like overall open and click rates. It also shows the number of active subscribers you have.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other dashboard tabs let you dig deeper into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Subscriber data (<strong>Audience<\/strong>)<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A more detailed breakdown of open and click rates (<strong>Engagement<\/strong>)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And headline earning figures (<strong>Monetization<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is still just the tip of the iceberg. Beehiiv\u2019s full reporting options are under the <strong>Analyze <\/strong>tab. Here\u2019s where what it calls \u2018<strong>3D analytics<\/strong>\u2019 kicks in. The different colours on this bar chart show different activities. So things like posts sent, emails delivered, opens, and clicks. The idea is to see how activity influences your subscriber growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New subscriber engagement funnel. This visualizes how many emails sent to new subscribers convert to opens and then clicks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This is real pro-level marketing analytics. There\u2019s a bit of a learning curve getting to grips with how to use them effectively. But I like the fact that beehiiv uses visualizations to help you. The rest of the subscriber report tabs drill down into even greater depth. For example, <strong>Cohort Analysis <\/strong>tracks new subscriber activity over 16 months. This helps you see if a certain new \u2018cohort\u2019 is active for a while, but then starts to lose interest. And then look at why that might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.emailvendorselection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/beehiiv-subscriber-analytics-cohort-analysis.png\" alt=\"beehiiv subscriber analytics cohort analysis\" class=\"wp-image-92326\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a similar story with <strong>Post and Click reports<\/strong>. Every post you make gets its own detailed reports page. This shows the basics like opens, clicks, and any unsubscribes after receiving it. But it also breaks down which links got clicked. And shows who interacted with a post. Whether that\u2019s clicking a link, sharing, or adding a comment. You can toggle post analytics between email only, web views only, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clicks report shows link-by-link click analysis. Rather than just links in a single post, the Clicks report tab includes all links in all posts. You can set a timeframe you want to analyze. And search for specific links by keywords in the URL. Link analysis is an excellent way to understand how to get more conversions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One great thing about beehiiv\u2019s click metrics is that it measures what it calls <strong>verified clicks. <\/strong>This means it filters out clicks by bots that distort your data. I <em>love <\/em>a lot of what beehiiv does. It makes for a great creator-friendly newsletter platform. It\u2019s innovating in email marketing and how you turn a newsletter or a blog into a business. Its audience growth and monetization features are top tier. I\u2019m also impressed with its automation, segmentation, and analytics tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think beehiiv will get even better. Some of its navigation is clunky. It could improve its design tools, especially by providing more templates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So is beehiiv the right newsletter platform for you? It\u2019s worth checking out if you have ambitions to start and grow a successful monetized newsletter.
